Surgery

We understand that having a pet undergo surgery can be stressful. Our goal is to make the experience as safe and comfortable as possible for both you and your pet.

 

Sunnycrest Animal Care Center performs a wide variety of surgical procedures, including:

  • Spay and neuter procedures
  • Removal and biopsy of masses and tumors
  • Abdominal and gastrointestinal surgery
  • Foreign-body removal
  • Wound repair
  • Dental and oral surgery
  • Eyelid and other soft-tissue procedures
  • Selected orthopedic procedures
  • Emergency procedures when appropriate

Preparing for Surgery

Every patient is evaluated individually before anesthesia. Depending on your pet’s age, health, medical history, and the planned procedure, we may recommend blood and urine testing, electrocardiography, X-rays, or other diagnostic tests.

If testing identifies a concern, we can modify the anesthetic plan, recommend additional evaluation, or postpone an elective procedure when appropriate.

We will give you specific fasting, medication, and arrival instructions before surgery. Because individual medical conditions can affect these instructions, please follow the directions provided specifically for your pet.

Anesthesia and Monitoring

During anesthesia, your pet is monitored carefully by our veterinary team. Monitoring may include heart rate and rhythm, oxygenation, blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and other parameters appropriate for the patient and procedure.

We use modern surgical equipment and techniques, including laser surgery, cryosurgery, and vessel-sealing technology when appropriate.

Pain Control and Recovery

Pain management is an important part of surgical care. We use medications and techniques selected for each patient and procedure to help minimize discomfort before, during, and after surgery.

Following surgery, your pet is monitored during recovery, and we will provide instructions for medications, feeding, activity, incision care, and follow-up.

If a procedure would be better performed by a board-certified specialist, we will discuss referral options with you.
