Electrocardiograms

An electrocardiogram, commonly called an ECG or EKG, records the electrical activity of the heart. It is a safe, noninvasive test that provides important information about heart rate and rhythm.
We may recommend an ECG when we detect an irregular heartbeat during an examination, when a pet has episodes of weakness or fainting, when heart disease is suspected, or when additional cardiac evaluation is appropriate before anesthesia or treatment.
What an ECG can help us evaluate
- Abnormally fast or slow heart rates
- Irregular heart rhythms
- Premature or abnormal heartbeats
- Abnormal electrical conduction through the heart
- Changes associated with certain heart diseases or systemic illnesses
- Heart rhythm before, during, or after anesthesia when appropriate
Specialist interpretation through IDEXX
All ECGs performed at Sunnycrest are submitted electronically to IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants for specialist interpretation. Each report is backed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist, giving us access to specialist expertise without requiring your pet to leave our hospital for routine ECG interpretation.
The report evaluates the heart rate and rhythm, identifies arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities, and provides conclusions and recommendations that help guide further testing, treatment, anesthesia decisions, and monitoring.
When a more complete cardiac assessment is needed, ECG findings can be considered together with thoracic X-rays, echocardiography, blood pressure measurements, laboratory testing, and the patient’s medical history.
How the test is performed
Small electrodes are placed on the patient to record the heart’s electrical signals. The procedure is generally painless and usually takes only a short time. Most pets do not require sedation.
An ECG evaluates the heart’s electrical activity, while X-rays and echocardiography provide different information about the heart’s size, structure, and function. These tests may be used together when appropriate to provide a more complete assessment of cardiovascular health.
IDEXX specialist report
After the ECG is transmitted electronically, we receive a written specialist interpretation from IDEXX. We review the findings with you and discuss whether any additional testing, treatment, or monitoring is recommended.
Here’s what our clients are saying about us:
“I’ve been coming to Sunnycrest Animal Care Center for over 30 years. I’m sure there are other good veterinarians but I have no desire to try another place since I love the staff and doctors at Sunnycrest and so do my pets!”
